First things first: The Introduction
Hello!
This is my first post in this blog and I wish to introduce myself to you. I am the Otaku Scientist. I am a graduate student of a Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. program, I hold a bachelors degree in Biology and a minor in Psychology. Currently, I am working on my thesis project at my institution, but I enjoy very much writing. Although writing is a big aspect of my career (grants, fellowships, progress reports, etc) I prefer non-technical writing with the space to be creative and connect dots people don't often see. And though I need empirical evidence to support my proposals I believe that sometimes a hunch is as valid as one hundred peer-reviewed papers.
Being a graduate student means I have a LOT of work starting from reading papers to be more than eight hours a day at the lab doing experiments and analyzing data. But not every day is like this, I am an avid defender of me-time just because it's necessary to be able to go through graduate studies with good mental health. I try my best to be diligent with my work, that way I have more free time for me and no regrets. But this doesn't mean I go without sad days. Yes, there are sad days, frustrating ones, days where you just can't see how you are going to start writing or reading. Here is where me-time is very important! Here is where I step back and ask myself how I can help myself feel better. I often start praying, but to avoid crawling myself into the bed I go to the TV and put Natsume's Book of Friends. After 20 min, a couple of tears and a cup of coffee I find myself ready to work. The emotional toll graduate studies take is real, but for that, you need to maintain a balance between your work and yourself, but yourself has to ALWAYS come first. I strive for that balance, taking care of myself and putting my needs first I find the motivation to work towards my daily work goals.
Sometimes, as an adult, I find people coming at me arguing that I am not mature enough. They say I don't understand the ways of life because I prefer to watch anime for 20 min and get the job done instead of what? Whining for the whole day a go to bed with the anxiety of the work you didn't do? For me, that just doesn't make sense. I am entitled to be an adult, not because of what I watch or what I like, but because of my experiences, the hardships I went through to be where I am right now. Right now, my friends, I am 25 years old, I have been president and treasurer of various organizations, I manage a non-profit educational organization and in about 2 years I will have my Ph.D. But for reasons of this blog, I would like to maintain my identity as the Otaku Scientist.
The purpose of this blog is to bring to you with discussions of mainstream and non-mainstream media, such as anime, TV shows, and films. I want to provide in-depth analyses from a scientific and psychological point of view. I wish these discussions stimulate you to share your point of view and challenge mine. As I said, sometimes a hunch, a gut feeling, is more valid than one hundred peer-reviewed papers. I would also like to share personal experiences and how geek culture has been a pivotal player in helping me overcome certain situations to reach those who may be going through the same. Maybe I could slip some nerdy info from time to time, what can I do? I'm a scientist.
With this, I finish my not-planned-lengthy, introduction.
Doozo o-hairi kudasai ✌🏻😁
Sincerely,
The Otaku Scientist 🔬
